Starters, Alternators and Much More - ARCO MARINE!!

Many years ago, up at the islands, I had the misfortune of my mooring cover giving away due to a heavy torrential rainfall. As such my bilge was full and with no problem, I stated the pump and out went the water. Unfortunately, unknown at the time it had wet the starter. The boat started and worked fine for a couple days on the water. When we returned the following weekend, it ran then while with the family moored, it did not start, sending us drifting towards a rocky shore. With no noise from the starter solenoid, I set the anchor and then hit the solenoid with the wrench and it worked.
Back at the dock I crawled into the bilge and after looking things over I decided to pull the starter. I replaced it with an OEM MerCruiser and it ran for many years afterwards. As a note that’s when I decided to install dual batteries as well.

Hence, many years latter I decided to replace the starter and alternator since both have been in service a very long time. As I worked on removing the starter, I was reminded that the unit weight upwards of 20 pounds. Holding it and getting to the bolts are almost impossible. That’s when I decided I would look at what a lot of guys are doing to replace their starers with light weight- high torque – low current draw starters.  This made sense to me since my engine in the past I had twin springs installed on the valves to keep them from having any valve float. As a note a valve and or valves will do so when the engine is laid up all over long periods of time weaking the springs.

On to my story, I looked at OEM, aftermarket and rebuilds and as I was discovering the origin of who build the starters and many other products for OEM’s I found a company named ARCO Marine who came highly recommended by others as in marine techs, boating circles and such. Looking at the products I traced some back to factory’s that are highly rated and build electrical componets to many OEM's. In fact ARCO Marine supplies many parts directly to OEM companies. All in I purchased a new High Tourque Starter, Auxilary Solioniod, and Alternator. Needless to say I cant wait to report on there installation and thier performance. Pictures to come!! As a note I did pick up the "ARCO Electrical Technical Manual" for the most part a more Comprehensive technical manual. It was published to assist marine technicians and those wishing to learn more about marine electrical systems. I found it interesting and a good resource for sharing with others.
